Gallery The Cards Press Release MastroNet, Inc. SGC

As baseball card enthusiasts ponder the treasures that have unexpectedly emerged from private holdings over the years, they always feel awe at what's come forth during the last few decades. And -- hope springing eternal -- they enjoy the wait, to see what's next. The hobby's greatest marvel yet might be just around the corner, right?

The 2004 National Sports Collectors Convention, held just a few months ago in Cleveland, Ohio, witnessed the introduction into the hobby of a truly incredible full set of 1914 Cracker Jack cards. As exceedingly scarce collectibles that pre-date World War I, the 1914 inserts are almost never found in quantities approaching the 144 different subjects needed to construct the series' complete gallery of legendary players. And, although typically seen with product staining affecting their surfaces, these exemplars are virtually pristine. Only in the dedicated hobbyist's wildest dreams could such an array have been expected to materialize!

The phenomenal set's significance is dual-fold. In terms of rarity and value, the assembly has sold for more than twice the benchmark figure previously attained by a series of cards -- of any kind. Its condition parameters are without equal: just as an example, one can observe that the set yielded the only pre-War card in the land (the singular piece depicting "Shoeless Joe" Jackson) graded 98 GEM MINT 10 by Sportscard Guaranty in that company's long experience with vintage treasures. Jackson's counterparts in the Cracker Jack line-up reveal commensurate, indescribably careful preservation. The logical speculation that these items came directly from the factory is borne out by every facet of their appearance. Rarity? Value? No other comparable cards have ever existed, and they can only be seen as "priceless."

Even more dramatic than their exclusivity, though, is the irresistible pull these splendid relics exert upon the emotions of the appreciative viewer. Such captivating artifacts, showcasing the athletes of their day's National Pastime, comprise a truly singular spectacle, the ultimate thrill ever known in the readily evocative world of baseball cards. Their beauty transcends technical description, and their aura of history is vibrant and palpable. The set's marvelously impressive presence acts as an inspiration to a degree almost beyond measure, and perfectly complements the cards' rarity.

More than just an industry's showpiece, this gallery is a cultural one. Indulge, and let the spirit soar, at the sight of these fascinating and incomparable artifacts of turn-of-the-century sports Americana.
